The February 5, 2014 board meeting was called to order by President Chuck Verdon at 6:50 PM.. Present were Chuck Verdon, Linc Haymaker, James Van Ornum, John Ellingson, Reita Campbell and Don McDougall.

We reviewed the status of the CVARS repeater. The power amplifier has failed, so we are currently running with 5-watts output, which seems to be fine for the CVARS weekly 8 PM Sunday net. There is some concern about the repeater receiver dropping some people during their transmission. It may need to be tuned-up or replaced. Chuck said he had a GE Master II repeater system that’ll need transmit and receive crystals for the WA7UHD repeater frequencies. The transmit crystal would cost $150 and the receive crystal $100. Chuck will discuss with Tom Herman the possibility and timing for when he could test and align the current repeater system.

Bill Harwell requested that CVARS to assume responsibility for managing communications for the annual Historic Lewis County Bike Ride (see: for last year’s flyer) held the Saturday before Mother’s Day. The board agreed, with Bill providing liaison with Mazie Schlickeiser and the Chehalis-Centralia Optimist Club.

James presented a bill for $250 (the same as last year’s premium) to renew the club’s liability insurance for another year. The board agreed.

James presented a proposal to amend the CVARS By-Laws by adding a new Section 4 to Article II (Dues):

Section 4. People passing the Technician Amateur Radio exam shall receive a free, voting or student membership for the remainder of the calendar year.

The board agreed to present the amendment to the CVARS membership, publicize the amendment in this newsletter, and have the membership vote on accepting the amendment at the March 2014 CVARS meeting.

The board meeting adjourned at 7:14 PM.

Chuck called the general meeting to order at 7:30 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag followed by people introducing themselves. The attendance sheets and CVARS Sunday 8PM Net Controller sheet were passed around.

It was announced that a VE testing session is scheduled for 2/15 1 PM, at the Packwood Fire Station and another session is scheduled for 2/27 7 PM, at the Riverside Fire Authority Station #2, 1818 Harrison Ave, Centralia.

The proposed By-Laws amendment to Article II (Dues) was presented to those in attendance and was received favorably. The floor recommended an additional amendment to Article I (Membership), adding:

Section 2: Badges are available through CVARS for voting or student members to purchase at cost.

This would formalize a motion to charge a nominal fee for a name tag approved at the February 1, 2012 CVARS Board Meeting.

ARRL Northwestern Division Director Jim Pace presented a video celebration 100 years of the ARRL.

Linc Haymaker talked about “Ham Radio Etiquette,” with an emphasis on using a repeater, and Bob Willey talked about “Etiquette ON The CW Bands.”

The meeting adjourned at 9:30 PM after drawing for 50/50. There were 50 people registering their attendance on the attendance sheets.
