CVARS Executive Session. Present:  James Van Ornum, Jeff Mayfield, Linda Morrison, Dick Morrison, and Ken Wages.  Bob Willey, KD7OWN, talked to the board about combining with their group for Field Day in June.  They hold their Field day at  Borst Park and are allowed to use the city’s comm. Van.  We would have to provide insurance for Stan Headwell Park.

Jim Van Ornum passed an attendance sheet around and asked who were ARRL members.

There was a discussion about the by-laws. Changes to the by-laws were enacted after discussion, motion and seconding as follows:

·         Article III; Executive Board; Section 1: The Executive board shall consist of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and three at-large board members.

·         Article III; Executive Board; Section 2: The president and vice-president shall not be eligible to serve more than two consecutive terms in the same office.

·         Article VI; Elections; Section 2: The election of new officers to the Executive Board shall take place at the   November meeting, with the new officers taking office in January.

·         Article VII; Amendments; Section3.Written notice of the proposed amendment will be published by posting on the society’s internet web site at least 7 days prior to the next meeting.

The Executive Board Meeting was adjourned at 7:30

The general meeting of CVARS was called to order at 7:30 by President Jim Van Ornum.  The proposed combined Field day was presented and also the changes to the by-laws.

Jeff Mayfield introduced the speaker, Eric Gildersleeve.  Eric was a member of CVARS prior to 2004.  He moved to Texas to attend the University of North Texas.  His presentation was on what Texas was doing with and for Hams and his employment as the Emergency Services Director in Denton County.

Texas has a public outreach web site we could visit, www., and find really helpful information.

He is part of a radio club that has over 285 members with an average attendance of 100-150 members and they meet twice a month.  The club is quite active and helps hams and serves in the community.  He is also part of a DCARA and ARES organization, that work with Homeland Security with emergency  communications.  They use D-Star to transmit.

They have a fully operational EOC, called Goliath.  One-fourth of it is a ham station. He showed the infrastructure they had and also showed pictures of a portable 110” tower.  They are able to make sure all handhelds work!

There were 22 people attending the meeting and Rob Majoros provided a great refreshment spread.

The 2011 CVARS membership dues are due by February 28, 2011. They remain a bargain at $15 per household. The special student rate for those licensed hams 18 years old or younger is $7.50. Associate membership for those interested in CVARS without a ham license is free. Dues are payable to the treasurer, Sharon Ellingson, or her assistant, John Ellingson, at the meetings, or mailed to:

Our first meeting of 2011 went well in a new location at the Fire District 5 Training Building in Napavine. Thanks to Dick Morrison for negotiating with the Fire Chief.

We thank Eric Gildersleeve for his presentation about amateur radio activities in Denton County, Texas. The web site for the Denton County Amateur Radio Association is Eric also mentioned the Cobra Senior Lite antenna. More information about it may be found at the manufacturer’s web site at

BY LAWS – The executive board approved some changes to the CVARS by laws to bring them in line with how the club is currently run. Check the marked up by laws at The amendments will be announced at the February 2011 CVARS general meeting and voted on at the March 2011 CVARS general meeting.

LICENSING – Two of us are interesting in studying for the Extra license exam. Let me know if you would like to join this study group.

FIELD DAY – We are continuing to talk with Bob Willey, the Centralia ARES EC, about joining forces for the 2011 ARRL Field Day.

MEETING TOPICS - Jeff Mayfield is responsible for setting up the meeting programs. We hope to have some hands-on activities like putting a connector on a piece of coaxial cable or building a 2-meter antenna that works better than the normal antenna "rubber ducky" on a handheld transceiver. Let Jeff know what topics you would like covered and volunteer to present a topic. We need some theory and some real world topics.
