JULY MEETING MINUTES

The July 3, 2013 board meeting was called to order by President Chuck Verdon at 7:00 PM. Present were Chuck Verdon, Barbara Southern, James Van Ornum, John Ellingson, Larry Pratt, and Don McDougall. Jim Pace, ARRL Northwestern Division Vice Director, presented the board with information about the Wilse Morgan WX7P Memorial ARRL Northwestern Division Scholarship. The scholarship is “intended to provide funding for the educational expenses of a young Amateur Radio operator (residing in the ARRL Northwestern Division) who is pursuing a degree at an institution of higher learning in specific curricula (in engineering, medicine, science or business).” The board voted to donate $200 this year to that scholarship fund. Additional information about the scholarship and the form for donating to the scholarship fund are available on the cvars.org web site under the FYI tab.

The board reviewed preparations for the 2013 CVARS Swapmeet. There was some discussion about the use of 146.460 MHZ as a simplex backup frequency for the Sunday night CVARS Net. The Western Washington Amateur Relay Association band plan, dated 6/2012, shows 146.460 MHz as part of the VNBD repeater output frequencies. It was decided to continue to use 146.460 MHz as a backup frequency until an interfering VNBD repeater is assigned at or near that frequency. The board meeting was adjourned at 7:15 PM.

Chuck called the general meeting to order at 7:36 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag followed by people introducing themselves. The attendance sheets and CVARS Sunday 8PM Net Controller sheet were passed around. The ham activities on the calendar for July and August were reviewed.

We reviewed the Wilse Morgan Memorial Scholarship and the board’s decision to donate $200.

Teresa Haymaker highlighted Centralia’s Summerfest celebration to take place on the 4th of July, and the role the amateur radio operators can play during the parade portion of the celebration. Chuck Verdon said the Centralia ARES group will be providing communications support the whole day.

The Field Day activities were summarized. There were 19 visitors to the site and 35 participants this year. Two CW operators had more than 200 contacts. The voice stations were more relaxed, but did help a lost amateur in Kitsap county whose cell phone did not work. It was suggested that we try to get a local radio station involved in the activities next year.

John Ellingson reviewed the planning for this year’s CVARS Swapmeet. On Friday, July 26, we will prepare the site, especially laying out yarn to mark the isles for the sellers’ cars to park. Dick Morrison will bring the yarn Friday evening. The Campbells will take care of the coffee maker to have coffee available during the Swapmeet. Linda Morrison will coordinate the handling of the tickets for thedoor prize drawings. John Ellingson will act as the auctioneer. The signs directing to the Fairgrounds were distributed.

The meeting adjourned at 8:48 PM after drawing for 50/50. There were 27 people attending.
