FEBRUARY MEETING MINUTES

CVARS Executive Session. Present:  James Van Ornum, Jeff Mayfield, and Jim Campbell.  We reviewed the proposed amendments to the club’s by-laws. It was noticed that the term “officers” is used in Articles V, VI, and VII, but is not defined. The wording was changed to consistently refer to Executive Board members. James Van Ornum will update the proposed bylaws on the club’s website, cvars.org.

We discussed the 2011 Field Day. Jeff Mayfield and Don McDougall will work with Bob Willey, of the Centralia ARES group, on the details to combine the two teams. In the mean time, James Van Ornum will get a quote from the ARRL sponsored insurance underwriter for club liability insurance.

The Executive Board Meeting was adjourned at 7:00.

The general meeting of CVARS was called to order at 7:30 by President Jim Van Ornum.  Printed copies of the proposed changes to the by-laws was distributed among the attendees. Voting by the membership in attendance on the proposed changes will be held at the March CVARS meeting.

Announcements:

·         Field Day 2011 is Sat&Sun, June 25-26, with possible setup on Fri, June 24.

·         CVARS Swap Meet is Sat, July 30. Doors open at 9 AM. John Ellingson will call for helpers at a future meeting.

·         Technician Class license instruction will be held 4 Tuesdays, February 15, 22, March 1, and 8, with testing to be held on Tue, March 15. Dick Morrison is organizing this activity at the LDS Church building, 2195 Jackson Highway, Chehalis. Contact him for additional information.

·         A reminder that the CVARS net meets weekly Sun evenings at 8 PM (2000 hours) on the CVARS repeater, 145.430 MHz, -600 kHz input offset, 110.9 Hz CTCSS.

Jim passed around an attendance sheet.

Potential future programs were discussed, with the following ideas:

·         “My Experience” with ham radio, electronics, computers, etc.

·         Why upgrade my license?

·         Simple 2-meter antennas

·         Digital modes in ham radio

·         Linux computer operating system and ham radio

·         Morse code

·         Packet radio for beginners

·         DSTAR and other new ham radio technologies

·         Antenna tuners

·         Antenna modeling

·         Any ARRL videos or speakers that might be available

·         Repeaters

·         A mini-swap meet

Jim Campbell showed some embroidery work he and his wife do.

Jeff Mayfield had a couple of videos that were interesting. The first was lengths of ice falling off a commercial broadcast tower into the parking lot.  AND THEN, there was this guy with a camera on his helmet climbing a 1,768 foot tower to work on the beacon light at the top. He took an “elevator” up about 1,600 feet, and had to climb the rest of the way under his own power. Only hooked up safety lines when he wanted to stop and rest. There are several copies of this video on the internet – google for “Stairway to Heaven Climbing Towers,” or check out this URL:

There were 15 people attending the meeting and Rob Majoros provided a great refreshment spread.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

BY-LAWS – A copy of the proposed by-laws, showing the additions and deletions, has been posted on the club’s web site. On the “CVARS Info:” tab near the top of the page, select “Proposed Amended By-Laws.”

MEETING TOPICS - Jeff Mayfield is responsible for setting up the meeting programs. Let Jeff know what topics you would like covered and volunteer to present a topic. We need some theory and some hands on topics. This list above should start you thinking, and its true – teaching (or presenting) a topic is a good way to learn more about that topic.
